Lars is a socially awkward and intensely lonely man, but his brother and sister-in-law's hopes are raised when Lars announces that a special woman, Bianca, has come into his life. They, along with the rest of their small community, must struggle with how to help Lars, however, when it is revealed that Bianca is a life-sized sex-doll ... about whom Lars cares very much. Do not be mislead by the silly- or prurient-sounding plotline. Though there are some heartfelt laughs, *Lars and the Real Girl* is a deeply moving story of a community's compassionate response to human suffering.
On the heels of a Pub Theology discussion about the XXX Church's decision to refurbish a brothel in Vegas, and after a couple of moving Pete Rollins parables, I am struck once again by the idea that perhaps the best way to help someone who is struggling is not to try to change her or to try to fix his problem but instead to be accepting and loving.
