A Note from Afghanistan

Here is a response from a Captain in the US Army to my article about Peace, Victory, and the Gospel. His response was printed in the September issue of the Banner.

Following this I will also post my response to his response, which the Banner has decided not to print.

Exploring the Dialectic of Faith and Reason

By BRYAN BERGHOEF
Local columnist

When I got up this morning, the sun was shining. I was a bit surprised, because the forecast called for clouds and rain, but not entirely. In other words, it was not out of the realm of normal experience. After all, even if there are clouds, the sun is still "shining." The difference is that my view of it is b… Continue

I know we have some coffee lovers at Watershed - so check this article out:

Hey Bryan, it was good seeing you again a few weeks back. We will be praying for you and Watershed. Your ministry has made a huge impact on our lives. The community at Watershed is like none I have ever been privileged to be part of before. God blessing is truly making impacts through you and the Watershed community! Oh and there was a book I read not too long back that may be interesting to you, its by Kenneth Bailey called Jesus Through Middle Eastern Eyes.

Bryan, was actually thinking of you this morning. Life has been good to date with lots of interesting challenges. I have been doing a lot of thinking and development of the ideas I have been using about who Jesus is. I strongly recommend NT Wright to you.
Anyways, I do not have anything specifically with children yet, but am willing to be challenged by some good ideas. I am planning a youth retreat, and do need some help for this. Would be a special project kind of thing, and I need to raise about 4k$'s for this because it is not in the budget. Would your youth be interested in participating in some fundraising? I need the $s by June 10. How is that for good advance planning? Caspar

Hey Bryan- I thought the service yesterday was awsome! I notice sometimes that it looks like you are recording your message. Is that just for your own use or are past services accessible? Just curious and no big deal either way.

Also to clarify, your parents clearly stunted your growth as a child by not allowing you to watch nearly enough "B" monster movies either after school or late at night (dragon vs. Godzilla). It doesn't really show too much in public though, so not a big concern.

Brett, oh Brett! I hope that your theological hunger was filled to the brim... and probably overflowing. I love him, his dicipline and devotion is admirable. He has much to offer, as do you in return... a possiblity of a beautiful kinship. Let me know what you decide :) .

Hey, man,
I happened to catch the one and only N.T. Wright on "The Colbert Report" recently! I don't know whether it was a rerun, but he was discussing his book _Surprised by Hope_. I think Colbert didn't give him quite enough room--Wright's a pretty witty guy, in addition to having something interesting to say--but NTW did get his main point out, even if Colbert didn't seem to pick up on it. Or maybe the Catholic in him was deliberately resisting the word of the Anglican.

I'm glad you're doing the Claiborne "Jesus for President" study; I feel as if I've been talking and thinking about that book a lot--like, since long before it was written. Maybe we could have a meeting or two at my place, or just meet half-way in, say, Nashville? :)

Well... Let's just say the good wives wanted the dad's back to the social realm of the "Ice Cream Social." In all honesty though, I think MacTavish took the prize.
