Profile Information

About Me:
Raised barefoot on a flower farm, alongside three brothers. Upon graduating with a bachelor's degree in Political Science, I worked for a congressman in Washington D.C. -- loved D.C. for its diversity, history, photographic opportunities, and cultural venues, but after seeing all the behind the scenes dealings in the political game, became completely disillusioned with politics and wanted no more part of it. So I headed to Seminary, where I met the wonderful Bryan.

Have done a lot of traveling/backpacking/road trips (am constantly craving more). . . Mexico, Japan, Indonesia, Singapore, Germany, Netherlands, France, Spain, Israel, all the provinces of Canada and 48 of the 50 United States.

Our family has been making efforts to be organic and green, to tread lightly on the earth, so to speak. We are also trying to educate ourselves about fair trade and being conscience consumers (this is a challenge when you grew up Dutch and "getting the most for your money" is ingrained in you from infancy.)

Am a stay-at-home mom of four sweet potatoes -- Henry, Winston, Charles and Josephine. I love being a teacher to them and have been forever, slowly plucking away on a book about simplicity in parenting.

an all around artsy-fartsy person -- singing, playing guitar, painting, photography and writing (songs, poetry and stories).

A Few Blades of Grass

This is an excerpt from Heather Flores' book Food Not Lawns: How to Turn your Yard into a Garden and your Neighborhood into a Community:

A Few Blades of Grass

French aristocrats popularized the idea of the green, grassy lawn in the eighteenth century when they planted the agricultural fields around their estates with grass to send the message that they had more land than they needed and coul… Continue

Well... I do have posters available through Cafe Press... I can send you info on that. I would love to look into getting prints done. I'm halfway there... all the paintings have been professionally photographed. I need a personal manager. :-)

Hi Christy! I talked to my mom this afternoon and she said a few girls were interested in learning to knit. We talked about possibly getting together this week if anyone is interested or able. But we were wondering where? Would you have the boys? If so, would you be able (or want to) meet at your house? Let me know. Maybe if a few of us could get together this week, we could discuss what night works best for everyone...

Hey Christy! Yes, I spin yarn, maybe not great yarn but I'm learning--self taught. I used to teach knitting a few years ago at YarnQuest. A knitting party would be fun, I'm all for it. I'd be happy to help you work with patterns. And by the way, I'm a big fan of red wine too!

I don't work Monday until 1, if that would be a good time to bring over food, etc. I don't work this Sunday (thank goodness) so I can also talk this over with you at church. :)

i love seeing you and your kids at oryana. i would love to walk to work everyday, especially today (or at least the beautiful and summery morning). i would like to help with the meals for Tammy- I can supply produce or other items from oryana if someone (who is better at cooking) could use them to prepare that meal. let me know if that sounds like it might work...

Wow, thanks! That book sounds really cool! I was debating even putting that in my profile, I'm always afraid people will think I'm conspiring against the government! Actually... if I could work for them as their "assassin" expert, I think that would pretty much be the coolest job ever.
